3 Reasons To Teach Young Children A Foreign Language

Mar 30, 2026 | MULTILINGUALISM

Walking into a class, and trying to wrap your head around a new foreign language that you barely hear outside of your environment is overwhelming and it can be difficult sometimes, but it is well worth the effort because there are many benefits, and these tips and tricks can help you thrive in your language learning journey.

  1. Read as much as you can – like in any other language in order to increase your vocabulary and pronunciation reading plays an important role in learning. Constantly pushing yourself to read and practice your pronunciation can help you master your accent and improve vocabulary skills. An added bonus is that it helps build your confidence in that language.
  2. Watch cartoons and movies – Watching language oriented cartoons and movies (with subtitles, of course) helps children to visualize and understand the essence of a language. By finding easy ways to stay interested in the language, a child is more likely to continue learning the language for a longer period of time when it seeps into their daily life.
  3. Listen to music or audiobooks – Listening to podcasts, music, and audiobooks can help children practice the accent and pronunciation more naturally. Speaking always boosts a person’s confidence. This is also a great strategy to introduce immersive learning experiences for your child. By making time to listen to the language outside of classroom hours, the child is able to stay connected to the language.
  4. Thoughtful designed materials that are relevant to practice – Using a well thought out set of materials is an important aspect of learning. Today there is a surplus of language learning material in the form of apps, educational videos, toys etc. However it’s important to curate a selection for your child so they are not overwhelmed or misguided. Working with good materials that can be used independently to complement your child’s classwork keeps your children on their toes.
